Easter Sunrise service

Easter Sunrise Service

April 5, 2015

April 5, 2015 ~ 6:30 am

*Opening Praise:     “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” (1-2)

  1. Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!

Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!

Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!

Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

  1. Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!

Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!

Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!

Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

Sing Praise #2 “At the Font” (1-4) FWS #2114

  1. At the font we start our journey, in the Easter faith baptized;

doubts and fears no longer blind us, by the light of Christ surprised.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Hope held out and realized.

  1. At the pulpit we are fashioned by the Easter tale retold

into witnesses and prophets, by the power of Christ made bold.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Faith proclaimed, yet still untold.

  1. At the altar we are nourished with the Easter gift of bread;

in our breaking it to pieces see the love of Christ outspread.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Life embraced, yet freely shed.

  1. At the door we are commissioned, now the Easter victory’s won,

to restore a world divided to the peace of Christ as one.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Easter’s work must still be done.

“Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” (3-4)

  1. But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!

Our salvation have procured, Alleluia!

Now above the sky he’s King, Alleluia!

Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

  1. Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!

Praise eternal as his love, Alleluia!

Praise him, all ye heavenly host, Alleluia!

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he           ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 24:13-35

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our   companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Reader: He has Risen.

Response: He has Risen, indeed!

MESSAGE             “Easter Sometimes Happens in the Evening”

Pastor Michael D. Keffer

LITANY OF CONFESSION

Leader: We gather here as a fellowship of people who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord.  One of the major marks of this fellowship is the sense of joy we experience as we gather to worship God, to give thanks for Jesus Christ and to witness to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  Yet, we admit that there are times when we feel afraid, abandoned, and lonely; when faith leads to doubt and questions rather than a sense of joy or peace of mind. Lord Jesus Christ, unlike those first disciples, we cannot touch you or see you, and so it is all too easy to become downcast and given to despair.

All: Forgive us when, like the disciples, we find the truth of Easter hard to believe;

Leader:   Come to us, risen Christ, come through the closed doors of our hearts and minds and take away our fears and doubts;

ALL: Come to us, risen Christ, breathe on us and fill us with the joy and peace of your presence.

Leader: Bless us all as people who have not seen you, but who believe that you are truly the risen Christ, Son of God.     Amen.

GREETING     Responsive

Leader: Christ Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree.

People: That we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

OPENING PRAYER              Unison

O God our Father, we celebrated the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ, into the Holy City, Jerusalem, and as we did so, we remembered that He was received gladly with shouts of praise and acclamation, with evidence of loyalty and caring for Him. Grant, our Father, that as we collect these things we may also remember that He was later despised and rejected and therefore became a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Our Father, as we remember both these aspects of the Holy Week, may we find it in ourselves to have that loyalty and praise and acclamation which may be permanent; that we may be steadfast in loving and serving Him. And, O God, help us to remove from our lives those things which sorrow the Christ, those actions which show any rejection of Him by us. This grace and this blessing we ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ. On this Holy Thursday, the day in which You did institute the Holy Sacrament of Your supper; as we prepare to sit at Your table, we confess our sins. We are unworthy to be Your guests unless we find pardon and cleansing and renewal. Make us conscious now of Your redeeming love. After removing from us the consequences of our folly and our faults, work in us our holy will. Let this occasion reinforce within us the loathing of evil, may we from now on cling to which is good; to the honor of Him who seals our forgiveness with His own shed blood. Amen.
